As part of our goal to be self-sustaining, we operate a bakery in the town. The bakery sells all kinds of popular vegetarian meals and snacks. We are particularly well known for our chocolate, banana and carrot cakes. The busiest time is perhaps breakfast, when lots of tourists and long-term volunteers come to enjoy fresh coffee with our famous fresh fruit mix.
While enjoying the food at the bakery, guests can peruse our little book shop. We have perhaps the best English-language selection in town, with a diverse selection ranging from blockbusters to travel guides to classics and academic titles. Right next to our little library is our popular internet service. Guests pay a small fee to use our computers, but of course free Wifi is available to all those who bring along their own laptop. We also have a space where guests can browse and buy products from our Weaving Center.
Providing Opportunities and training
For us, the bakery is not only a means to generating revenue. It is also one a way of providing work for some of the many Burmese people in the area who have fled to the Thai border area in search of work. It also functions as an occupational training center, where some of our older children can gain valuable experience learning about the service industry. Last but not least, the bakery is where Baan Unrak gets its sweet and baked goods for giving to guests and the children on special occasions.
