Women's Project

Single mothers often come to Baan Unrak for help because they no longer can provide for their children.  Many of these mothers have been abandoned by their husbands.  There is a severe lack of jobs in our community, and single mothers with little or no job skills are rarely chosen for employment.  In most cases, these women are immigrants from Burma and face discrimination and many legal barriers as they struggle to integrate into Thai society.

At Baan Unrak, we believe that keeping families together is best for the children.  In order to help children, it is our mission to help single mothers as well.  Currently, there are ten single mothers living at Baan Unrak.  These women are provided with a simple house to live in with their children, as well as the option to learn job skills and be employed at Baan Unrak.

Providing Opportunities

In 1993, we opened a weaving and sewing center to provide opportunities for women to develop job skills and earn an income for themselves and for the children's home.  Throughout the years, we have expanded and now sell our products internationally through fair trade organizations and in our three small, local shops.
