Across the world, every child possesses incredible vitality and a strong desire for life.
They come into the world eager to embrace it, undeterred by challenges.
This vitality is even stronger in neglected and forgotten places but often goes unnoticed and unsupported. Such is the life of border children. Few understand who these children are. Born in a country different from their parent's homeland, they have no protection from either their birth country or their parent's country. They are often seen as a nuisance by the host country.
The worst part is their lack of documents, leaving them stateless and vulnerable. Without an adult or a country to protect them, they easily become victims of unscrupulous people or gangs involved in human trafficking.
This statelessness denies them basic rights, leading to limited opportunities and frequent discrimination. Many of these children are talented and bright, but their “stateless” status marginalizes them.
Many parents are unaware that they need to register their child’s birth. They think a hospital birth certificate is enough. Some parents lack the knowledge or courage to register the birth at the district office. Others, who entered Thailand illegally or live in remote tribal areas, were given birth by village midwives.
We care for children entitled to Thai nationality or registration, but finding their parents is often difficult. Many parents fear authorities and need support to come forward. Some lack the necessary documents, leaving DNA testing as the only option. Yet, parents hesitate, fearing job loss from taking leave to travel long distances.
Despite these challenges, we are committed to securing the rights our children deserve.
Statelessness deeply impacts the children at Baan Unrak Foundation.
The lack of nationality denies them fundamental rights and opportunities.
We hope our efforts will improve their lives and ensure they receive the rights they deserve.
