Rebuilding Myanmar: Stories of Hope and Resilience

Rebuilding life after a tragedy can be challenging, but the resilience of the community and our volunteers demonstrates that, regardless of the circumstances, we can accomplish anything.

Over the past month, we have some inspiring stories to share. Before diving into those, we want to provide an update on the shelter construction.

Although funds are dwindling, our volunteers are tirelessly working to accelerate the process of building shelters for those in greatest need. Despite facing several challenges, they persist in their selfless efforts.

During the process of building these homes, our builder that we trust got severely injured. Instead of rushing ahead with someone else, we chose to wait for him, because his commitment and honesty meant so much to us and to the families we serve. He insisted on coming back to work shortly after. His dedication is a reminder that this work isn’t just about building houses; it’s about building trust, community, and hope together.

Due to a heatwave, workers sometimes had to build and perform tasks at night, as the daytime conditions had become challenging.

As we keep building, something beautiful has been happening in the community. We’re beginning to see other houses spring up that look just like the ones we built. Some of these are ours, but others have been built by different organizations, and even by families who managed to save enough to build for themselves. The most inspiring part is that the simple and affordable approach we introduced has caught on, it’s being adapted and passed along. In a way, it has started a movement.

Yet, families still seek out our homes, because we don’t just put up walls and a roof, we also build proper floors. And that one detail makes all the difference, giving many families a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable place to live in.

The most compelling story remains the sacrifice of the community and our volunteer team in helping one another. The weather has often been harsh; some volunteers became ill, and one even needed hospitalization. Our trusted carpenter suffered a serious injury. Yet their spirit never faltered. They kept morale high, listened to people’s concerns, and offered comfort.

Their greatest reward is the smile of the new homeowners, who now have safe shelters from which they can rebuild their lives. Many have started small businesses, basket weaving, sewing dresses, repairing cars, making pots. The local economy is slowly stepping toward recovery, and gratitude fills the air.

In their free time, our volunteers also tutor poor children in Maha Aungmye, those we have already supported with uniforms and school supplies. These children, who cannot afford private tutors and usually struggle in Myanmar’s overcrowded classrooms, now have a real chance to pass their exams. Thanks to our teachers, success feels possible, and parents’ smiles are becoming more frequent.

Helping the young generation brings new hope. The faces of all those we assist are alight with gratitude and optimism.

The Countdown

As of 30 July 2025, we had completed 14 houses, and by mid-September we finished 18 more, bringing the total to 32 houses donated to the community.

We fulfilled the pledges of our donors:

  • 10 houses from GlobalGiving

  • 3 houses from Paul Croft (UK)

  • 2 houses from AMURT Italy

  • 2 houses from AMURT UK

  • 1 houses from Cristina Noce

As we continue our work, we need even more support. We still have 45 houses to build, and the people need us now more than ever. Fortunately, AMURT Italy has pledged 3 more houses, and Baan Unrak sponsors have pledged 2 more. We are moving forward, bringing hope and helping to rebuild the local economy.

If you can, please consider making a donation. Your generosity fuels our mission, and we are deeply grateful to all who have supported us along this journey.

Together, we can make a difference in the community and help those in need. Thank you 🧡
